The emphasis in Contemporary photography gives more emphasis to capture the story and atmosphere from the day, so the viewer gets a feeling of appreciation of what the wedding was like, rather than a series of pre-planned poses. But this term could be mistaken for meaning any photograph that is not posed or formal. However,
contemporary wedding photography is more than just not taking very formal photographs and involves the use of composition, lighting and timing to shoot images that have a very strong visual appeal.

There is some uncertainty over what constitutes contemporary and how this differs from other forms of wedding photography. Even though contemporary wedding photography might have an element of photojournalism it is definitely not exclusively that style of photography.

Style

Spontaneity, genuine expressions and gestures, the things that make each bride and groom individual - these are things which I continually hone in on when photographing a wedding or engagement session. Even when I’m working with the couple, perhaps even directing them a little, I am still looking for something real - something uniquely ‘them’, as we collaborate in getting wonderful images of their wedding.There is a strong sense of story-telling in my photography. However, I’m not particularly adamant about the idea of ‘photojournalism’ in wedding photography. I do interact with people and especially during the portrait session I might direct the bride and groom - all in an effort to give my couples the best wedding photographs I can. In that way, the portrait session with the bride and groom becomes a collaborative experience. I really want to stay far away from cheesy grins for the camera and static posed images. We really want that spontaneity and expressions. The real thing.
What I find are those genuine moments where the bride and groom interact with each other .. and that’s what I give back to them in the photographs I show them. Whether it is a found moment, a gesture, an action which just … works. Really works. 

During the portrait sessions, I try for a natural approach. I do want my couples to appear relaxed and look like themselves. To this end, I “take myself out of the picture”, by using a longer lens and have them talk to each other, cuddle, walk and just be together. This will definitely help with any nervousness in front of the camera - and give portraits which appear casual and relaxed.
Wedding portaits should be about capturing the romance, and capturing the relationship between the couple. I would much rather work with the couple and with the light available. I want to show how much they are in love with each other, rather than the wooden structure at the reception venue which is not custom made .
A fourth style that is popular in Asian countries, especially in China & India , is wedding studio photography. Typically, couples will select a studio in a similar manner as western couples select a wedding photographer.
