Photography is generally the process of capturing light on a light-sensitive medium such as a film or electric sensor. This light is exposed on a sensitive silver halide based chemical or electronic medium during exposure for a particular time which is usually done through a photographic lens. The word photography comes from the French word photography which is based on the Greek words phos which means light and graph which means drawing. Product photography is an important sub range of advertising photography. It deals primarily with the photographic presentation of goods of all kinds for example photographs for catalogues, folders, and posters, announcements in magazines or newspapers and so on. so a product photographer is essentially an advertising photographer. There are numerous products which are shot and each is highlighted in an interesting light arrangement and possibility with graphically working shade throws, sometimes even adding accessories such as a decoration set with things which complement product photograph. Product photos are sometimes associated with a variety of sense environments and local colors in order to lend the product a certain type of image and local hue. In the case of food photography, potential consumers are deliberately deceived even regarding the product. Electronic treatment of photographs found a comprehensive entrance into the world of product photography in the past two decades. Equipped with the latest digital imaging equipment and a creative eye for bringing out the best in your product, personality or location If you're new to commercial advertising photography and are looking for some dynamite images to really represent your company or its products, you're probably speaking with photographers and are hearing terms such as "creative services" and "usage fees" and are wondering what it all means. Fear not, these are just industry terms rarely heard outside of our niche! Let's use product photography or advertising photography as an example. A product photographer / advertising photographer charges a "creative fee" for the labor of actually laying out and photographing your products, which typically includes cleaning ink overspray and label residue if necessary, removing as much microscopic lint as possible (you don't see it, but the camera does), meticulously arranging and aligning groups of products, positioning products at the best possible angle with all sorts of little hidden supports, setting up the lighting for the look desired based on the reflectivity and color of the products (which may be different across products in the same group), eventually taking photographs, making lots of adjustments to all of the above things, taking more photographs, getting client approval on proofs, and finally post-processing the images using specialized software to clean up the backgrounds, remove product packaging defects, erase lint and dust spots, combine products that couldn't be photographed together due to reflections, etc. In addition to the extensive labor, a portion of the creative fee also goes to camera and lighting equipment costs and studio overhead, which are significant. Last but not least, the product photographer must spend time carefully packing up your products and shipping them back to you. The "usage" or "licensing" fee is based upon how you intend to use your product images. For example, say you start a home-based company that makes soda and you need a product photo of your bottle for your web site and limited printed promotional materials. For the first few years, only a few hundred thousand people will see your products and your usage needs are pretty minimal. So the usage fee (licensing) portion of the product photographer's invoice will be extremely small. Compare that to a similar photo of a Pepsi bottle used in a national TV and print campaign, which will be seen hundreds of millions of times. The creative fee for your product and for the bottle of Pepsi will be roughly the same, but the product photographer's usage fee for Pepsi will be tens of thousands of dollars. That's usage; you only pay for what you need. Another aspect of commercial photography to consider is the product photographer's skill, experience and equipment investment, which has a profound effect on image quality. Do you want mediocre images to hopefully "get you by" temporarily, or do you want images that you can use for decades, which are just as great ten years from now as they are on day one? Can your business really afford "cheap" images that don't present your personnel or products in the best possible light? How much will it hurt sales? Product photographs are your salespeople when you can't be there - especially on the internet, where your products can only be seen and not touched. What are your photos saying about your product or service? Are they creating buyer confidence and embarrassing your competition? These are the questions you need to ask yourself before you finalize your choice of product or advertising photographer.
